Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about data broker removal, CCPA opt-outs, and how DataShield works.

What is DataShield?

DataShield is a digital footprint scanner and automated data broker opt-out service. It scans 200+ consumer data broker sites and submits CCPA opt-out and deletion requests on your behalf as your authorized agent. No contracts. No hidden fees.

How does the free scan work?

Enter your name and email on the homepage. Our system runs a real-time scan across 200+ data broker sites including Spokeo, BeenVerified, Whitepages, Intelius, and many more. Results appear live as each site is checked, showing which brokers have your information exposed. No credit card required.

What data brokers does DataShield cover?

DataShield covers 31 branded broker sites with dedicated scan routines plus full coverage of the California Privacy Protection Agency's official Data Broker Registry. In total, that means 200+ data broker and people search platforms, including:

  • Spokeo, BeenVerified, Whitepages, Intelius
  • MyLife, FamilyTreeNow, PeekYou, Radaris
  • TruthFinder, PeopleWhiz, Nuwber, ZoomInfo
  • Ancestry.com, Pipl, Lusha, RocketReach
  • PeopleLooker, PeopleSmart, US Search, ZabaSearch
  • And hundreds more through the CA DPPA registry
Is DataShield's broker list verified?

Yes. DataShield's broker coverage is sourced from the California Privacy Protection Agency's official Data Broker Registry, which lists all data brokers legally required to register with the state of California. Each broker on our list is verified to accept email-based opt-out requests under the CCPA.

How is DataShield different from Incogni or DeleteMe?

DataShield offers a free scan with no credit card required, transparent pricing at $9.99 per month, and a 70% removal guarantee within 30 days. Larger services charge $130 to $170 per year. DataShield focuses on the highest-risk brokers where your data is most likely to be exposed, giving you faster, more targeted results.

What is the CCPA and how does it help me?

The California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) and the California Privacy Rights Act (CPRA) give consumers the right to request that data brokers delete their personal information and opt out of the sale or sharing of that information. As of 2026, the Delete Act requires all data brokers registered in California to process these requests. DataShield submits CCPA requests on your behalf as your authorized agent.

Do I need a power of attorney for DataShield to act on my behalf?

No. Under the CCPA, you can designate DataShield as your authorized agent via signed written permission. No power of attorney or notarization is required. DataShield maintains your signed authorization on file and provides it to data brokers upon request. The authorization form is simple and straightforward.

How does the opt-out process work?

Once you subscribe, DataShield submits CCPA deletion and opt-out requests to every broker found with your information. Each request includes your signed authorization letter designating DataShield as your agent. Brokers are legally required to respond within 45 days under California law. DataShield tracks each request and follows up as needed.

How long does it take for data brokers to remove my information?

Under California law, data brokers have up to 45 days to respond to a verified deletion request. In practice, many brokers remove information within 7 to 14 days. DataShield guarantees 70% removal within 30 days. Some brokers require additional verification steps, especially for phone-based verification.

What if a data broker ignores my opt-out request?

If a data broker fails to respond within the legally required timeframe, DataShield escalates. For the Concierge tier, we handle additional verification steps including phone verification for brokers that require it. If a broker continues to refuse, you can file a complaint with the California Privacy Protection Agency, and DataShield can help with that process.

Does DataShield work for people outside California?

Yes. While the CCPA is a California law, it applies to any US consumer whose data is collected by a covered business. Data brokers registered in California must honor deletion requests regardless of where you live. The CCPA provides the strongest data privacy protections in the United States, and DataShield leverages those protections on your behalf.

What happens after my data is removed? Will it come back?

Data brokers can reacquire your information from public records, data partnerships, and new data aggregations. That is why DataShield runs weekly rescanning. Each week, we check whether your information has reappeared on any broker sites and submit new removal requests as needed. Ongoing monitoring is the only way to stay protected.

What is the difference between Self-Serve and Concierge?

Self-Serve at $9.99 per month includes weekly scans and automated email-based opt-out submissions across all covered brokers.

Concierge at $24.99 per month includes everything in Self-Serve plus handling phone-verify brokers, priority removal escalations, and personal support from our team.

Both tiers include the free initial scan.

Can I cancel my subscription?

Yes, anytime. No contracts, no cancellation fees, no hoops. Cancel and your data is removed from our system. Any opt-out requests already submitted to data brokers remain in effect.

Is my payment information secure?

Yes. All payments are processed through Stripe, a PCI-compliant payment processor. DataShield never stores your credit card details. Stripe handles all payment data directly. The site is served over HTTPS with full TLS encryption.

How do I contact DataShield?

You can reach DataShield by email at [email protected]. We aim to respond within 24 hours during business days.
